Turn Repair Time Into a Household Cash Figure

A workshop quote prices the work. It does not price the days when the car is unavailable. Replacement trips, extra coordination and a delayed return can reverse a close workshop comparison.

Build the downtime estimate from your household's actual trip pattern and written workshop dates. Do not use a generic daily rate when one household can switch easily to public transport and another must preserve school, care or shift-work trips.

Downtime formula

Net downtime cash = replacement transport + extra household costs + collection or admin trips − avoided car costs.

Track extra hours separately. Add an optional time value only when it helps compare two routes.

Map the days before pricing them

For each expected day off-road, list:

Price the normal weekday and any weekend separately. A five-day workshop stay can affect seven calendar days if it crosses a weekend.

Work a five-day household example

Assume the household replaces two necessary car trips per day with ride-hail at S$28 per trip. It also expects public-transport top-ups, one delivery change and a collection trip. These are hypothetical inputs, not current fare estimates.

Five-day inputCalculationAmount
Ride-hail2 trips × S$28 × 5 daysS$280
Public transport top-upsHousehold estimateS$25
Delivery or schedule changeHousehold estimateS$30
Workshop collection tripOne tripS$22
Fuel and parking avoidedSubtract−S$60
Net downtime cashS$280 + S$25 + S$30 + S$22 − S$60S$297

If the change also creates 45 extra minutes per day, the household loses 3.75 hours over five days. At an optional planning value of S$20 per hour, that is S$75 of non-cash time, taking the comparison figure to S$372. Keep S$297 as the cash budget and label S$75 separately.

Add downtime to each workshop quote

Suppose Workshop A charges S$1,600 and expects five days. Workshop B charges S$1,780 and confirms two days because the part is in stock. Using the same household pattern:

Total routeWorkshop AWorkshop B
Repair invoiceS$1,600S$1,780
Net downtime cashS$297 for 5 daysS$132 for 2 days
Optional time value3.75 hours × S$20 = S$751.5 hours × S$20 = S$30
Total comparison figureS$1,972S$1,942

Workshop B's invoice is S$180 higher, yet its comparison figure is S$30 lower. That result holds only if the repair scope and two-day return are credible. Use the workshop comparison worksheet to normalize parts, labour, calibration and warranty first.

Price delay risk, not only the promised date

Ask each workshop for three dates:

DateWhat it meansWhat to confirm
EarliestEverything is available and no extra approval or damage appearsWhether the part is physically in Singapore and the repair bay is booked
LikelyThe workshop's planning date under normal conditionsOutstanding insurer, survey, dismantling or calibration steps
DelayedA plausible downside caseBack-order, supplementary damage, approval and rework process

Run the cash worksheet for the likely and delayed dates. If a route rises from two to eight days, the household should know the extra exposure before approving it.

Keep accident process ahead of speed

After an accident, the fastest-looking workshop is irrelevant if it sits outside the insurer's required route. GIA's Motor Claims Framework requires reporting within 24 hours or by the next working day. The insurer may direct the reporting centre, workshop and towing process.

A third-party property-damage claim may also need a pre-repair survey before repairs begin. Complete the reporting and inspection steps, then compare downtime among the routes that remain available. Use the first 24-hour accident checklist and the private settlement versus insurance guide first.

Copy this downtime sheet

If the issue can safely wait, compare this total with the cosmetic repair timing test. If downtime is recurring rather than one-off, use can your household rely on an aging car.

FAQ

What belongs in car downtime cost?

Add replacement transport, delivery or care changes, collection and administration trips, and an optional value for extra time. Subtract fuel, parking and road charges that disappear while the car is unavailable.

Should I put a dollar value on family time?

Keep time visible even if you do not monetize it. If a value helps compare routes, label it as a planning value rather than cash spent and test more than one value per hour.

How should I compare workshop completion dates?

Ask for the earliest, likely and delayed return dates, whether parts are physically available, what approvals remain and when the workshop will update you. Price the likely case and test the delayed case.

Can I choose the fastest repair after an accident?

Only within the insurer's reporting, inspection and workshop process. Report first, confirm the authorised route and any pre-repair survey, then compare turnaround inside the allowed options.

Sources and method

All worked amounts are hypothetical planning inputs. Replace them with written workshop dates, actual household trip costs and policy instructions.
