Test the Car Against the Trips That Cannot Fail

An aging car can be roadworthy and still be a poor fit for a household that cannot absorb uncertain starts, repeat workshop visits or delayed repairs. Reliability is the match between the car's recent behaviour and the trips the family must complete on time.

Do this test before debating a replacement model. It tells you how much disruption the household can tolerate and which event should force a fresh decision.

Reliability rule

“Still running” is a condition, not a household plan. Keep the car when faults are understood, recovery is predictable and backup transport protects every critical trip.

Map one normal week of critical travel

List travel windows rather than kilometres. A short school pickup with no late alternative can be more fragile than a long commute beside an MRT line.

Travel windowMust arrive byBackupFailure consequence
Work or shiftFixed / flexiblePublic transport, ride-hail, colleagueLate arrival, lost time or income
School or childcareFixed handoverPartner, family, ride-hailLate fee, missed handover or another adult leaves work
Medical or eldercareAppointment or care windowAccessible taxi, family, rescheduleMissed care or more coordination
Essential errandsOften movableDelivery, combine trips, public transportUsually delay rather than failure

Mark a trip fragile when the backup is unavailable, unaffordable, inaccessible or too slow for the required arrival time.

Build a 12-month reliability record

A single repair with a confirmed cause can restore confidence. Several unrelated events can still create unacceptable volatility. A repeated fault is a different signal from ordinary wear items replaced on schedule.

Check safety, inspection and recalls first

LTA says periodic vehicle inspection helps maintain roadworthiness and emissions standards. Its inspection covers systems including brakes, steering, tyres and wheels, suspension, chassis and body, propulsion, and visual or indication equipment. Follow the stop, diagnose or schedule test for any current symptom.

Passing inspection does not promise day-to-day availability. Check LTA's Electronic Vehicle Recall System separately; a dealer or importer arranges rectification when a vehicle is affected by a notified recall.

Price one realistic outage

Assume a household has 14 fixed travel windows in a busy week. Six can switch to public transport, six need ride-hail at S$26 each, and two require an adult to change work plans at an estimated S$60 each. Public-transport top-ups add S$18.

One-week backup planCalculationCash
Public transportSix windowsS$18
Ride-hailSix windows × S$26S$156
Work-plan changesTwo windows × S$60S$120
One-week outage cashS$18 + S$156 + S$120S$294

If the backup plan also adds five hours, keep that time visible even if you do not assign it a dollar value. These inputs are hypothetical. Use actual routes and the car downtime worksheet.

Pass five reliability gates

Write the exit trigger now

A useful trigger is specific and observable:

“We keep the car while the present fault is resolved, no repeat fault occurs, and any outage stays within three days. Another tow, the same fault returning, or a repair quote above S$[amount] triggers a 24-month repair-versus-replace comparison.”

The amount is not a universal percentage of car value. It should reflect remaining COE, current value, expected exit value, the next repair scope and how dependent the household is on reliable transport.

Use the result in the next decision

If the car passes the reliability test, track whether it remains genuinely cheap with the 12-month old-car ledger. If a large quote has arrived, use repair versus replace over the next 24 months. If replacement debt is the real concern, compare the paid-up car with a newer financed car.

FAQ

How old is too old for a household car?

Age alone does not answer it. Use roadworthiness, recall status, recent unscheduled faults, repair recovery time, the household's critical trips and the strength of backup transport.

Does passing inspection prove an aging car is reliable?

No. LTA periodic inspection checks roadworthiness and emissions at a point in time. It does not guarantee that the car will start every day or that no future fault will interrupt household travel.

What should count as an unplanned reliability event?

Record no-starts, towing, warning faults that stop normal use, repeat workshop returns, missed critical trips and workshop stays beyond the promised date. Keep scheduled servicing separate.

When should the household set an exit trigger?

Set it before the next fault. A trigger can be another tow, a repeat of the same failure, downtime beyond the backup plan, or a repair amount that forces a full repair-versus-replace comparison.
