Compare the Repair Contract, Not the Logo

An authorised dealer and an independent workshop can quote different jobs under the same repair label. One may include original-equipment parts, diagnostic time, calibration and a longer warranty; the other may use a different part specification or charge some steps only when needed.

Choose after both workshops describe the same fault, scope and result in writing. Brand status and a low headline price are weak substitutes for a comparable contract.

Workshop rule

Normalize diagnosis, parts, labour, calibration, warranty and downtime before comparing totals. If any line is missing, the price gap is not yet meaningful.

Clear the route constraints first

ConstraintWhat to verifyWhy it changes the choice
Vehicle warrantyWarranty wording, required maintenance, part specifications and whether the present fault could be linked to earlier third-party workWarranty repairs and causation disputes can make the dealer route valuable
Accident policyApproved workshop entitlement, additional excess, reporting and inspection routeA non-approved repair may affect coverage or cash due
RecallLTA recall status and dealer or importer instructionsA recall rectification follows the manufacturer route
TechnologyAccess to software, service information, high-voltage procedures, tooling and calibrationThe job may require model-specific capability
PartsOriginal equipment, original-equipment supplier, aftermarket, reconditioned or usedPrice, availability, warranty and expected service life may differ

Vehicle warranty and accident-insurance entitlement are separate. A warranty may allow independent servicing while the insurance policy restricts accident repairs, or the reverse. Ask the dealer and insurer for written answers about the actual case.

Use Singapore's warranty position accurately

CCCS says authorised car dealers should remove restrictions that require owners to service or repair exclusively at authorised workshops simply to maintain the car warranty. CCCS also says dealers must not mislead owners into believing such a blanket restriction exists.

That does not make all third-party work consequence-free. CCCS notes that warranty repairs may be required at authorised workshops, and a dealer may reject a claim where it establishes that third-party work caused the defect or the owner failed to follow the manufacturer's proper periodic servicing. Keep invoices, dates, mileage, part specifications and the service schedule.

Normalize both quotations

Ask each workshop to complete the same eight lines:

  1. Diagnosis: fault codes, measurements, inspection findings and the failed item.
  2. Part: brand, part number, condition and whether alternatives need approval.
  3. Labour: operations and hours included.
  4. Associated work: fluids, seals, fasteners, alignment, programming and calibration.
  5. Price: diagnostic fee, parts, labour, consumables, tax and possible supplements.
  6. Authority: no additional work without written approval above an agreed amount.
  7. Warranty: duration, coverage, exclusions and who pays repeat diagnosis.
  8. Time: parts status, intake date, likely completion date and delay process.

Ask whether the old parts can be returned or shown, subject to exchange-core and warranty requirements. Keep the estimate, approval, inspection report and final invoice together.

Compare the total repair route

Assume two hypothetical workshops diagnose the same non-accident repair. The household estimates car downtime at S$75 per day using the downtime worksheet.

Comparable lineAuthorised dealerIndependent workshop
PartOE part: S$1,200Named alternative specification: S$820
LabourS$520S$420
Diagnosis and calibrationS$220S$160
Consumables and tax allowanceS$80S$65
Workshop totalS$2,020S$1,465
Likely downtime3 days = S$2252–4 days = S$150–S$300
Total planned exposureS$2,245S$1,615–S$1,765

The independent route is S$480 to S$630 lower in this illustration. That difference buys a different part specification and a wider completion range, so the decision is still incomplete. Confirm compatibility, repair warranty, calibration and parts availability. The figures are hypothetical and are not market prices.

Choose by the job, not the age alone

Authorised dealer becomes stronger when…Independent workshop becomes stronger when…
The work is a recall or warranty repairThe job is outside warranty and the scope is well understood
Model-specific software, calibration or technical escalation is centralThe workshop can document the necessary tools, data and prior experience
One accountable record and manufacturer support justify the priceA clear, itemised quote produces a material saving on equivalent work
The dealer confirms parts and a completion dateThe independent workshop has the part and offers a better verified turnaround

A mixed strategy can be rational: dealer for recalls, warranty and model-specific work; a trusted independent for routine or well-defined repairs. Keep one complete service record so the next workshop can see what was done.

Use a written approval message

“I approve the listed scope up to S$[amount], including tax. Contact me before extra work. The approved part is [brand/part number/specification]. Please record diagnostic findings, calibration performed, warranty terms and the expected completion date on the invoice.”

If you have not yet decided which faults belong in the scope, return to the repair urgency guide. For appearance-only work, use the cosmetic repair timing test.

FAQ

Can a dealer void my whole warranty only because I used an independent workshop?

CCCS says dealers should remove restrictions that require exclusive authorised-workshop servicing merely to keep the warranty valid. A dealer may still require warranty repairs at its authorised workshop and may reject a claim if it establishes that third-party work caused the defect, or if required maintenance was not performed. Read the actual warranty and keep complete records.

Does an accident policy let me choose any workshop?

Not necessarily. Workshop entitlement and excess can depend on the policy. Report the incident and ask the insurer which reporting centre, inspection and workshop route applies before authorising repairs.

Is the lower workshop quote the better quote?

Only when the diagnosis, part specification, labour scope, calibration, tax, repair warranty and downtime are equivalent. Normalize those terms before comparing totals.

When is an authorised dealer route more useful?

It can be useful for warranty repairs, recalls, software or model-specific work, or when the owner values one accountable service record. The advantage must still be matched to the actual job and written terms.
