Selling Before COE Expiry: Work Back from the Handover Date

Start planning while you can still compare a sale, renewal and deregistration on their actual numbers. There is no universal best month to sell. The useful deadline is the latest date your chosen route can finish while leaving a workable fallback.

Build an exit plan with dates and amounts

Record the COE expiry, the last date you need the car, expected sale proceeds, any loan settlement, and the next transport arrangement. Get dated quotes before deciding that using the final months is better value.

Jump to a planning schedule, the cost of waiting, net proceeds or handover checks.

An example schedule, not a legal selling deadline

Illustrative planning buffers; allow longer for complex finance or replacement arrangements
Planning window before expiryWork to complete
About 90 daysConfirm vehicle dates and status; get sale/disposal quotes and a lender settlement figure; decide whether a replacement is needed.
About 60 daysCompare sale routes, inspect any replacement, estimate the cost of keeping the car until your proposed handover.
About 30 daysChoose a route, confirm funds and handover conditions, and book backup transport or disposal if needed.
Before the agreed exitRefresh expiring quotes; confirm payment, ownership transfer or disposal steps and who is responsible for each.

Bring these steps forward if the car is difficult to sell, your replacement has an uncertain arrival date or you need uninterrupted transport for care or work. If you are already close to expiry, start with executable written offers and an available fallback rather than waiting for an ideal buyer.

Know which transaction you are planning

Compare complete routes, including the transport needed afterwards
RouteWhat to establish
Sell or trade in as a registered vehicleAn agreed total price, finance clearance and confirmed ownership transfer.
Deregister and disposeEligible rebates, separate body/export proceeds, disposal charges and required documents.
Renew and continue usingPermitted renewal term, actual premium, inspection findings and enough cash to fund the decision.

A sale transfers the vehicle’s associated rebates to the buyer. Do not treat the sale price and those rebates as separate receipts for you. Outstanding financing must be cleared for transfer. LTA ownership-transfer requirements.

Worked example: keep the car for three more months?

Assume the car is debt-free. You have a S$28,000 offer now, expect S$24,000 at the later exit and budget S$2,400 to run it for those three months. Both routes end without this car, sale expenses are equal, and no differing refunds or financing costs apply.

Hypothetical offer, future value and costs; future sale price is uncertain
Cost of waitingAmount
Expected fall in sale value: S$28,000 − S$24,000S$4,000
Three months of running costsS$2,400
Cost of retaining the car for those tripsS$6,400
Monthly equivalentS$2,133.33

If equivalent transport after selling now costs S$3,000 for those months, selling now is S$3,400 cheaper in this example. If it costs S$7,000, keeping the car is S$600 cheaper. Price the trips you would actually make, including rentals or taxi costs and any accessibility needs.

A later offer of S$26,000 instead would reduce the cost of waiting to S$4,400. Update the scenario when you get a new quote. If you plan to buy another car immediately, include its depreciation, finance, running costs and value at the same comparison date; its purchase payment alone is not the three-month cost.

Sale price is not the cash left for the next car

As a separate example, a S$28,000 sale, S$18,000 lender settlement and S$500 selling expenses leave S$9,500. If the next car needs S$20,000 upfront, the shortfall is S$10,500. Those proceeds may not arrive before the new payment is due.

Ask whether an offer is gross or already net of settlement and fees. Obtain a lender quote for the actual intended settlement date. If debt exceeds proceeds, budget the additional cash needed to clear it. Read selling a car with an outstanding loan.

For deregistration, check age- and cohort-dependent PARF and unused COE for the actual date. Keep any body/export quote and disposal fees separate unless the quote explicitly includes them. LTA rebate eligibility and calculation. Compare net proceeds for each route, not a dealer’s headline price against a partial rebate amount.

Make the handover executable

LTA requires ownership transfer within seven days when a used vehicle changes hands. Coordinate cleared payment, buyer acceptance and physical handover; verify completion through OneMotoring. Do not give another person your Singpass credentials. LTA seller and buyer transfer instructions.

If the car reaches expiry before the sale is complete

COE expiry without renewal deregisters the car; it cannot be driven. A permitted late renewal within one month attracts a fee and is not permission to keep driving. LTA expiry and late-renewal rules. Do not plan an ordinary drive-away sale after expiry.

A deregistered vehicle must be properly disposed of through scrapping, export or an appointed export processing zone. Arrange towing/transport, and submit disposal proof within one month of deregistration. LTA deregistration and disposal instructions. Check the precise sequence for your disposal route before acting.

If renewal remains an option, revisit the renewal decision guide and the cost calculator. Compare selling methods through trade-in versus direct sale and consignment versus dealer sale.

Frequently asked questions

Must I sell three months before expiry?

No. The schedule is an illustrative planning buffer. Choose dates that allow your sale, funding and replacement or disposal arrangements to finish with a fallback.

How do I compare selling now with keeping the car longer?

Add the expected fall in exit value to running, finance and differing transaction costs over the extra period. Compare that with the cost of meeting the same transport need after selling now.

Is the advertised sale price the amount available for my next purchase?

Only if nothing must be deducted. Check loan settlement, selling fees and payment timing before relying on the proceeds.
