Compare the Settlement Quote With the Cash You Give Up
Early settlement is a quoted transaction, not the remaining principal on your own spreadsheet. Obtain the lender’s amount for a specific date, compare it with the remaining instalments, then test whether using the cash weakens the household reserve or improves a planned sale.
The core calculation
Contractual saving = remaining scheduled instalments − settlement amount − unavoidable settlement costs. Keep liquidity and sale benefits as separate decision lines.
Jump to the settlement quote, the ABS example, the liquidity test or the sale decision.
Request a dated settlement statement
Ask the lender to show:
- the amount payable and the date through which it is valid;
- instalments or arrears already reflected;
- the interest rebate or adjustment method;
- early-redemption, administration or other charges;
- payment instructions and when the financing interest will be released;
- the revised amount if another instalment is paid before settlement.
MoneySense advises borrowers who may repay early to consider early-repayment terms, not only EIR, and to obtain a repayment schedule. MoneySense borrowing-cost guide.
Worked example: rebate is not all unpaid interest
The Association of Banks in Singapore publishes a hire-purchase illustration using a S$30,000 car loan over five years at a 2.6% annual flat rate. The scheduled interest is S$3,900 and the monthly instalment is S$565. After 25 instalments, its example applies a Rule of 78 rebate of S$1,342.62.
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Original principal plus five-year interest | S$33,900.00 |
| 25 instalments already paid | S$-14,125.00 |
| Unearned-interest rebate | S$-1,342.62 |
| Settlement amount | S$18,432.38 |
| 35 remaining instalments without settlement | S$19,775.00 |
| Difference before other charges | S$1,342.62 |
The example’s saving equals the stated rebate before any other applicable charge. It is not the full S$2,275 of arithmetically unpaid interest from the original schedule. The actual result depends on the agreement, statutory scope and lender quote. ABS car-financing illustration.
Understand why timing matters
ABS explains that Rule of 78 apportions more flat-rate interest to earlier periods. A settlement later in the term may therefore receive a smaller rebate than a borrower expects from dividing total interest evenly. The current statement is the reliable decision input. ABS Rule of 78 explanation.
Test the cash position after settlement
Continue the ABS example with hypothetical household figures. Assume S$50,000 of accessible savings and a S$35,000 non-negotiable reserve.
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Accessible savings | S$50,000.00 |
| Settlement payment | S$-18,432.38 |
| Cash left | S$31,567.62 |
| Required reserve | S$35,000.00 |
| Reserve shortfall | S$-3,432.38 |
Settlement saves S$1,342.62 in the published illustration but breaches this hypothetical reserve. The buyer can wait, rebuild cash or ask whether partial prepayment is available under the contract. A positive interest saving does not override a failed liquidity constraint.
Connect settlement to the sale plan
When sale is imminent, compare:
Net proceeds = gross sale price − lender settlement − sale costs.
A sale price below settlement creates negative equity that must be funded. LTA states that vehicles being transferred should not be under financing and provides transaction safeguards for payment and transfer. Coordinate the approved sequence with the lender and buyer rather than paying an early settlement solely for psychological simplicity. LTA transfer guidance.
Use the outstanding-loan sale worksheet for the full payment and handover sequence.
Compare three decisions, not two
- Settle now: accept the quoted saving and remove future instalments.
- Keep the schedule: retain cash and continue contractual payments.
- Settle as part of sale: align debt clearance with a verified buyer and transaction plan.
Recalculate when the lender quote, sale offer or household reserve changes. Do not reuse an expired settlement figure.
Decision rule
Settle early when the dated contractual saving is meaningful, the post-payment reserve remains intact and removing the debt improves a real plan. Keep the loan when settlement would create liquidity strain or when the flexibility gained is not yet useful. Align settlement with sale when a verified exit is the main reason to clear the financing.
If you are still choosing the original funding route, use car loan versus cash. If a large final payment is involved, use the final-payment schedule worksheet.
Frequently asked questions
Does early settlement save all remaining car-loan interest?
Not necessarily. The lender applies the contract and any statutory or contractual rebate method. Compare a dated settlement quote with the remaining scheduled instalments.
What is the first number I should request?
Request a written settlement amount valid for a stated date, with the rebate, fees and payment instructions shown.
Should I settle before selling the car?
Use the seller, buyer and lender’s approved sequence. Compare sale proceeds with the settlement and do not assume the loan can remain attached after transfer.
