Full-Day Childcare vs Half-Day Preschool: Fees and Care Hours
Choose the programme that covers the hours your household actually needs. Half-day preschool can cost less when a willing adult reliably covers the rest of the day. Once you add paid afternoon care, extra travel or reduced earnings, the cheaper school fee may produce a higher household cost.
Quick answer
Compare full-day childcare, half-day preschool plus home care, and MOE Kindergarten plus KCare as three different arrangements. Price the complete weekday, school holidays and backup plan. Compare programmes for the same eligible child and start date; an infant-care place and an older child’s kindergarten place are not substitutes.

Start from dated fees, then apply the right support
| Programme | 2026 monthly reference for a Singapore Citizen child |
|---|---|
| AOP full-day childcare | S$610 fee cap before GST and subsidies |
| POP full-day childcare | S$650 fee cap before GST and subsidies |
| MOE Kindergarten | S$160 school fee before means-tested fee assistance |
| KCare added to MOE Kindergarten | Separate care fee. MOE lists a 2026 maximum of S$425 and an SC Basic Subsidy of S$150; check the selected centre’s actual invoice. |
ECDA’s AOP caps; ECDA’s POP caps; MOE Kindergarten at Tampines fee schedule; MOE’s KCare fees and support. A fee cap is not a quote for every centre. Check GST, deposits, uniforms, transport and any compulsory extras.
For eligible full-day childcare with a working main applicant, the Basic Subsidy is S$300. Thus the AOP cap with 9% GST is S$664.90, or S$364.90 after that Basic Subsidy. The corresponding POP figures are S$708.50 and S$408.50. These examples exclude Additional Subsidy and extras. ECDA’s Basic Subsidy schedule.
Do not apply the childcare subsidy to a kindergarten invoice. Kindergarten Fee Assistance Scheme (KiFAS) support and KCare assistance are separate. Confirm your child’s approved net amounts, especially for part-day programmes, a changed working arrangement or a 2027 start date.
Worked example: compare three complete arrangements
Use the AOP cap example above for full-day childcare. For a specific published kindergarten example, MOE Kindergarten at Tampines lists S$160 school fees and S$210 KCare fees after the S$150 Basic Subsidy for Singapore Citizens in 2026. Together they are S$370, before any further assistance or extras. This is a named centre’s fee schedule, not the fee at every MK.
Now add assumed travel and backup-care budgets. For half-day preschool, assume family care has no direct charge; record the adult’s time separately.
| Arrangement | School and care fee | Monthly household cash |
|---|---|---|
| AOP full-day childcare | S$364.90 after Basic Subsidy | S$504.90 including S$80 travel and S$60 backup budget |
| MK plus family afternoon care | S$160; no paid afternoon carer | S$340 including S$120 travel and S$60 backup budget |
| MK at Tampines plus KCare | S$370 using the published net example | S$510 including S$80 travel and S$60 backup budget |
In this illustration, the family-care option saves S$164.90 a month against full-day childcare. If the household instead pays S$250 monthly for the afternoon care, its total rises to S$590, which is S$85.10 more than the full-day example.
The cash break-even for that afternoon-care payment is S$164.90 a month, holding every other assumption fixed. That does not price a relative’s effort. Four hours of afternoon care on 20 weekdays is 80 hours of care. Record those hours and the caregiver’s willingness independently; do not label unpaid time free or turn an assumed hourly value into a bill that nobody pays.
If a parent must reduce paid work, calculate the actual change in take-home income separately. Avoid adding both foregone pay and an imputed value for the same hours to one cash total. Review preschool versus a stay-at-home parent and childcare versus grandparent care for those wider decisions.
Write a timetable before choosing the shorter day
| Time or event | Person or service responsible |
|---|---|
| Before school and morning travel | Name the adult and the earliest workable drop-off time |
| Programme hours | Use the actual session; an illustrative 8am–noon programme covers only four hours |
| Noon to the working parent’s return | Name who provides lunch, rest, supervision and afternoon pickup |
| School holidays and closures | Check the annual calendar and book any additional coverage |
| Child illness or caregiver unavailable | Name the backup and the work or cash cost of using it |
KCare is available at all MOE Kindergartens and operates on weekdays until 7pm, including school holidays. MOE lists closures for public holidays, Teachers’ Day, Children’s Day and up to six additional days a year. KCare fees remain payable in June and December. Check KCare’s operating calendar. Confirm the daily start time and your own centre’s dates.
The Tampines MK fee schedule also spreads school fees over 12 months, including June and December. Paying the school fee in a holiday month does not itself buy holiday supervision. Full-day childcare also needs a backup for closures or days the child cannot attend.
Which arrangement fits your household?
- Two adults with fixed work hours: compare full-day childcare with MK plus KCare using net fees, travel and the actual collection deadline.
- A parent intentionally works part-time: half-day preschool can fit if the afternoon care aligns with that chosen work pattern.
- A willing nearby grandparent: agree days, travel, rest and a backup. Reassess if the arrangement depends on recurring overtime from the caregiver.
- A helper already provides afternoon care: compare the additional school and travel cost, while keeping the helper’s whole employment cost visible in the wider household budget.
Visit the shortlisted programmes and assess the child’s routine, interactions, environment and your communication with educators. Programme length alone does not establish educational quality or suitability.
Questions to put to each centre
- What are the exact daily hours, holiday dates and late-collection terms?
- What is the written fee after GST and the child’s approved subsidies?
- Which deposits, registration fees and extras are separate, and what is refundable?
- Is the needed care place confirmed for the intended start date?
- What happens to fees and subsidies if the child changes programme or the family withdraws?
Continue with preschool cost planning, infant care versus childcare and childcare near home versus work. Use the childcare-versus-helper calculator when comparing a wider care arrangement.
Frequently asked questions
Is half-day preschool always cheaper?
No. Add afternoon care, travel, backup arrangements and any actual loss of take-home pay. A smaller school bill does not establish a lower household cost.
Can MOE Kindergarten provide a full-day arrangement?
MOE Kindergarten can be combined with its separate KCare service. Confirm the care place, hours, calendar and net fee with the selected centre.
Should I deduct S$300 childcare subsidy from a kindergarten fee?
No. The subsidy schemes differ. Use the approved kindergarten assistance and KCare support for their respective invoices.
How should I account for unpaid family care?
Record the hours, caregiver agreement and backup plan separately from cash spending. Add actual payments or reduced take-home income only where they occur.
