Turn the Car Quote Into Comparable Lines
A headline price, trade-in allowance and monthly instalment answer different questions. Put them on separate lines before negotiating. The car’s acquisition price should remain visible even when a rebate, trade-in or loan changes the cash due on delivery.
Use one comparison rule
Comparable acquisition price = delivered vehicle price + mandatory dealer charges + chosen extras. Record conditional rebates beneath that subtotal. Record trade-in proceeds and financing in separate sections.
Jump to the quote layers, the worksheet, the worked example or questions before deposit.
Know which layer you are discussing
| Layer | Examples | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle and statutory structure | OMV, registration fee, ARF, COE, excise duty, road tax and applicable emissions adjustment | Exact variant, registration basis and delivered-price breakdown |
| Dealer charges | Administration, processing, delivery or documentation charges | Mandatory amount stated in writing |
| Chosen extras | Accessories, service package, insurance or extended warranty | Separate price and ability to remove |
| Conditional adjustments | Finance rebate, trade-in support or campaign discount | Trigger, expiry and clawback terms |
| Separate transactions | Trade-in proceeds and loan cash flows | Independent valuation and finance schedule |
LTA lists the upfront structure for a newly registered car, including registration fee, ARF, COE, road tax and excise duty. OMV is assessed from the vehicle’s import value. Emissions rebates or surcharges depend on the applicable registration period and band. LTA vehicle tax structure.
You do not need to rebuild every tax calculation from an advertisement. You need the exact car, the delivered price and the conditions that can change it. Use LTA’s current tables for structural checks rather than a dealer’s shorthand.
Rewrite the dealer quote
- Record the delivered vehicle price before trade-in and financing.
- Add every mandatory dealer fee that sits outside that price.
- Add only the optional extras you actually choose.
- List each rebate with its condition instead of netting it silently.
- Record the existing car’s trade-in value as separate sale proceeds.
- Record downpayment, principal, instalments, fees and total repayment in a finance section.
For a GST-registered seller, IRAS says displayed or quoted prices for the public must be GST-inclusive; if both forms appear, the inclusive price must be at least as prominent. For new-car GST accounting, regulatory fees such as ARF, COE, registration fee and road tax are treated separately from the taxable selling-price component. Worked example: two headlines, the same acquisition subtotal
Assume both hypothetical quotes refer to the same variant and delivery timing. Financing cost and trade-in are deliberately excluded from the acquisition subtotal.
| Line | Dealer A | Dealer B |
|---|---|---|
| Delivered vehicle price | S$150,000 | S$149,500 |
| Mandatory dealer fee | S$1,200 | S$500 |
| Chosen accessories | S$1,800 | S$0 |
| Comparable acquisition subtotal | S$153,000 | S$150,000 |
| Finance-linked rebate | S$-3,000 | S$0 |
| Amount after conditional rebate | S$150,000 | S$150,000 |
The apparent tie is incomplete. Dealer A requires financing and includes S$1,800 of chosen accessories. Compare the value of those accessories and the loan’s total cost before calling the offers equal. If the finance cost exceeds the S$3,000 rebate, the lower advertised amount does not create a lower overall purchase.
Keep the trade-in on the other side of the ledger
Suppose Dealer A offers S$47,000 for your existing car and Dealer B offers S$45,000. Do not subtract the allowance before comparing replacement-car prices. First compare the S$153,000 and S$150,000 acquisition subtotals. Then compare the trade-in offers with a direct-sale or independent dealer-sale alternative.
Net delivery cash = acquisition amount after valid rebates − trade-in proceeds − loan proceeds.
Net delivery cash is useful for funding. It is not the replacement car’s price. Use the trade-in versus direct-sale worksheet for the existing asset.
Do not let the loan rewrite the quote
Once the acquisition subtotal is clear, compare the finance schedule. MoneySense advises borrowers to use EIR, include fees and check total borrowing cost and the repayment schedule. A flat-rate car loan applies interest to the original principal, so the advertised percentage is not the effective annual cost. MoneySense borrowing-cost guide.
Use the full finance-quote worksheet and the cash-versus-loan comparison only after the acquisition price is stable.
Questions before deposit
- What is the delivered price before trade-in and financing?
- Which fees are mandatory and outside that price?
- Which extras can be removed, and what is the revised total?
- Which rebate depends on a loan, insurance, trade-in or deadline?
- Can the trade-in and replacement-car price be agreed independently?
- What written condition governs the deposit if price, finance or delivery changes?
Decision rule
Choose the quote whose acquisition subtotal, conditions and separate transactions you can reconcile. A lower delivery cash requirement can come from selling more of your existing asset or borrowing more. It does not prove the replacement car costs less.
Before paying, carry the final quote into the commitment evidence gate.
Frequently asked questions
What price should I compare across car dealers?
Compare the delivered vehicle price plus mandatory dealer charges and chosen extras. Keep trade-in value and financing cost as separate transactions.
Should a finance-linked rebate reduce the cash price?
Show it as a conditional rebate. Add the linked loan’s fees and total borrowing cost before deciding whether it creates a real saving.
Is a high trade-in offer the same as a lower purchase price?
No. Record the trade-in as proceeds from your existing asset so a flattering allowance does not hide a higher replacement-car quote.
